With the access dark in the winter months, Asahi is intended to be a comforting addition to the sterile light therapy box typically used to aid those with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Because S.A.D. is caused by a lack of light exposure, Asahi is designed to evoke a feeling similar to the direct sunlight that bleeds into a room on the brightest mornings of the year. With materials such as wood and paper, it has a warm appearance that is fit for the home.
DATE - SPRING 2020
software used - sketchup, adobe suite
PROJECT TYPE - PRODUCT DESIGN
Repetitive and regular use of Asahi in the morning will help regulate melatonin levels and circadian rhythms. However- it doesn’t need to be used as a S.A.D. lamp exclusively. It was designed with a rotatable table under the light source, and can be adapted based on the user’s needs. The light can be turned towards the user to be used for light therapy through the translucent rice paper shade, or it can be rotated away from the user, where it reflects off a heavy white paper, creating a cozy ambient environment.
